Here is an update for those interested in the progress of the new book, New Heroes.

The initial writing is finished, and the book is out on its first round of edits. So far the reception has been overwhelmingly positive, perhaps even a little embarrassingly so. (Certainly much better than I had thought it would be.)

When I sat down to write this book, I had in mind to create the kind of experience that I would enjoy. A book where the villains are vile, and the heroes are good, and you want to cheer or hiss even from the comfort of your living room.

However. . .

First books are notoriously bad. A new author has a lot to learn about writing, organization, and himself. I did as much research as I could before actually beginning, in order to (hopefully) avoid some of the pitfalls — but still, I tried to be realistic. My hope was that by the sixth book I wrote I might actually have something with some popular appeal, and that might translate into some sales. I was okay with that timeline, since at best I thought to finance a retirement out of these books.

So I feel I was understandably surprised when I was told by one of my first readers, (an author herself and one of my most critical editors) that by page forty-four, she thought New Heroes could easily be bestseller material, and that she would put those forty-four pages against the first forty-four of any on her (numerous) bookshelves.

Call me gobsmacked.

Right now I am working on some marketing stuff and trying not to think about it. In between I am creating the scene list for book two and helping Lena develop a cover. (She’s painting it for me. Yay!) I can’t decide whether to be giddy or terrified.

This is going to be the site for all of my newest stuff, books and announcements. There will be semi-regular blogs and updates, letting everyone know what to expect, as well as general interest. Additionally, I am planning on keeping all manner of short story works here, so if you are looking for something fun to read, you can just pop on in.

This is an exciting new time for me, and I appreciate you taking the interest to be here. Check back soon for more!

Awesome, Kevin – love the site, loving the book, can’t wait to see the cover!

Yeah. Me either! My cover monkey is wanting to read the book first… and we don’t really know WHEN that’s gonna happen.

      No pressure, Cover Monkey!

You got a funny way of showing “no pressure” writer monkey.

You mean that you are not going to do the art yourself?

        • Kevin on April 30, 2012 at 7:03 pm

No, I have a very specific idea for the cover art, and Lena would be WAY better at it than I would be.

Kevin! Thought you could escape my absence? The cleverly obvious link gave you away, sadly.

When does the book become available? Glad your still at it and looking forward to reading it.

Well… the book is finished, but I decided to rewrite it. By the time I got to the end I felt like I was doing so much better on it than I was at the beginning that I decided to take another pass. My hope is to make it as strong as possible when it does (finally) come out, and to be able to make as many of my mistakes as I can before anyone else sees anything. That way, once the first book is out, subsequent books should come faster.
